How to Apply for Access Broadband Cymru: Step-by-Step Guide

WiFiSetup · Independent application guide

Applying for Access Broadband Cymru, one step at a time

From creating your account to finding the application button. Clear instructions, with pictures when you need them.

You apply directly to Welsh Government. WiFiSetup provides broadband installation services, not application preparation or submission. This guide does not confirm that you qualify.

Open the official application portal ↗

Opens a new tab, so you can keep this guide beside it. Walkthrough recorded 17 October 2026; the portal may change.

Check broadband availability and explore grant installation support in Wales.

STEP 1 · YOUR LOGIN

Open the portal and choose Register now

Click Sign in with SOC on the Broadband Cymru page—even if this is your first visit. SOC means Sign On Cymru.

On the next screen, choose Register now. If you already have an account, sign in instead; use Forgot your password? if needed.

STEP 2 · VERIFY YOUR EMAIL

Request the code, then check your inbox

  1. Enter your own email address and click Send verification code.
  2. Look for an email from Microsoft on behalf of SOC Team, with the subject SOC Team account email verification code.
  3. Copy the code into the portal’s Verification Code box, then click Verify code.

Check spam or junk if it does not arrive. If you request a new code, use the newest one. Never share your password or verification codes with WiFiSetup or anyone else.

The sender address shown in our walkthrough was msonlineservicesteam@microsoftonline.com. The example code and recipient are hidden.

STEP 3 · CREATE YOUR PASSWORD

Wait for the green confirmation

Look for the green message confirming that your email is verified. The password boxes cannot be edited until verification is completed.

Choose a unique password that meets the portal’s displayed rules, enter it twice, keep it securely, then click Create.

If Create reports incomplete verification, request a fresh code and verify it. Editable password boxes alone are not proof that verification succeeded.

STEP 4 · SIGN-IN CHECK

Another code? In our walkthrough, yes.

After registration, we were asked to verify the email again during sign-in. Apparently, the first code was only the warm-up.

If you see this screen, request a code, enter the newest one and click Verify code. When the green confirmation appears, click Continue. You do not need to register again.

These were the steps encountered at the time of writing; every sign-in may not follow an identical sequence.

STEP 5 · YOUR CONTACT PROFILE

Read the privacy notice and add your details

Open View the privacy notice. If you can confirm that you have read and understood it, tick the box and click Continue.

The next screen is Create new contact. This builds your profile inside the portal; it is not a grant application.

  1. Enter your details and choose the appropriate user type: Residential, Home Business, Business or Voluntary.
  2. Complete the fields relevant to you. Do not invent company or VAT information.
  3. Enter your postcode, click Find Address and choose the exact property.
  4. Check the completed details, then click Create.

STEP 6 · START AN APPLICATION

Your profile is saved. Now find the application button.

The portal shows Saved successfully on the Contact details page. Click Back above those details to reach the applications overview—not the separate Back to top link.

A new account shows There are no applications yet. Choose Create new application to start.

STEP 7 · THE INSTALLATION PROPERTY

Is broadband needed at your contact address?

Choose Yes if the installation is at the address saved in your profile. Choose No if it is elsewhere: enter that property’s postcode, click Find Address and select the exact property.

There was a brief delay after selection during our test. Allow the details to load and check them before clicking Continue. The delay itself is not evidence of an eligibility decision.

Show the same-address and different-address options

Why can I enter another address?

Your contact address and installation address need not be the same. The published rules limit applications per premises, rather than per person. Our reading is that one person may apply for separate properties, but each must qualify independently and the applicant must own it or have the owner’s permission. This is not permission for duplicate applications for the same premises.

The scheme requires a UPRN, not explicitly council-tax registration. Availability of at least 30 Mbps through any provider matters—not just fixed-line availability. Welsh Government makes the eligibility decision.

What is a UPRN, and why can’t I edit it?

Unique Property Reference Number: think of it as the property’s identification number. It is not your application number or proof of grant approval. In our lookup, the portal filled it automatically and made it read-only.

If the property details are wrong or missing, ask the scheme team for help rather than selecting another property to get past the screen.

You do not need to watch the video to continue. Read Ordnance Survey’s UPRN explanation.

STEP 8 · COMPANY OR CHARITY DETAILS

Answer for the actual installation

On the different-address route, Yes revealed organisation fields; No hid them. Complete applicable details accurately, then click Continue.

Our account was registered as Home Business. When using its contact address, Yes was already selected and locked, with company details carried over. Choosing a different address made the question editable. We have not tested a separately registered Residential account.

STEP 9 · REVIEW BEFORE SUBMITTING

Read the declarations carefully

The final screen displayed Terms and Conditions and Submit Application. The declarations concerned public funding under Minimal Financial Assistance and recovery of money used contrary to the scheme conditions.

Only make confirmations that are true for you. If you are unsure about subsidy history or a declaration does not fit your circumstances, contact the scheme team before proceeding.

Show the final submission screen
Two unchecked declarations and Submit Application button

Within our Home Business account, the subsidy declaration also appeared after choosing No to the company/charity question. We cannot assume that a separate Residential account behaves identically.

Our demonstration stops here. We did not tick these declarations or submit an application. We cannot show a submission confirmation or application reference from this walkthrough. Real applicants must review their information and submit themselves.
