If full fibre is available at the property, FTTP will usually be the best primary internet connection. Where it is not available, a well-tested 4G or 5G service can be a cost-effective alternative. Starlink becomes especially valuable when fixed-line and mobile options are too slow, unreliable or simply cannot reach the location.
The important point is that the best result depends on the exact property. Hills, trees, building materials, mobile-network coverage, cable routes and the number of people using the connection can matter more than an advertised headline speed.

- Choose FTTP when it is available and the provider offers a suitable package. It normally gives the best combination of speed, consistency and low latency.
- Consider 4G or 5G when the property receives a strong, usable mobile signal and the data plan suits the expected usage.
- Consider Starlink when fibre is unavailable, copper broadband is inadequate, or mobile coverage is weak or congested.
- Use two connections when a farm, holiday park or business cannot afford to be offline. A compatible dual-WAN router can keep one service as primary and another as backup.

FTTP: normally the first choice where it is available
Fibre to the Premises runs fibre-optic cable all the way to the home or business rather than relying on the final section of copper cable. That makes it less sensitive to distance from the street cabinet and gives it an advantage for speed, latency and consistency.
For remote working, cloud services, large uploads, gaming, CCTV access and busy guest networks, a suitable FTTP package is usually the strongest primary connection. The broadband connection is only half the job, however. A fast fibre service connected to a poorly positioned router can still leave rooms, cottages, offices or pitches with weak WiFi.
Check the address using the Ofcom broadband checker and the Openreach fibre checker. Availability can differ between neighbouring properties, and other fibre networks may also serve the area.
4G and 5G: excellent in the right location, variable in the wrong one
Mobile internet can work extremely well when the correct network has a strong signal at the property. A dedicated 4G or 5G router is preferable to judging the service from a phone alone, and an external antenna may improve a marginal installation when it is properly selected, positioned and cabled.
Coverage maps are a useful starting point, but they are predictions rather than a site survey. Performance can vary by network, time of day, weather, terrain and local demand. In North Wales, a property may have a clear signal to one mast while a hill or woodland blocks another network completely.
Use Ofcom’s Map Your Mobile to compare providers, then test the strongest candidates at the actual property. For a business or holiday site, test at busy times and in the areas where the router or external antenna could realistically be installed.
Starlink: a strong option beyond practical fibre and mobile coverage
Starlink communicates with low-Earth-orbit satellites rather than relying on a cable or nearby mobile mast. It can therefore provide a capable connection at isolated homes, farms, workshops, holiday accommodation and caravan sites where terrestrial services fall short.
The installation location is critical. Starlink needs a broad, clear view of the sky, and trees, rooflines, chimneys or nearby buildings can cause interruptions. The Starlink app includes an obstruction-check tool, but the final plan also needs to consider secure mounting, wind exposure, cable protection, safe access and where the indoor network will be distributed.
As checked on 30 August 2026, Starlink’s UK residential plans started at £40 per month for a 100 Mbps plan in selected areas, with higher tiers advertised at £60 and £80 per month. Compare the whole cost, not only the monthly price
A fair comparison includes everything needed to produce a useful connection:
- FTTP: the broadband contract, any activation or installation charge, router choice and the internal WiFi or Ethernet work.
- 4G/5G: the router, SIM and data plan, testing across networks, and any external antenna, mount or cable route.
- Starlink: equipment or rental terms, the monthly plan, mounting hardware, safe cable entry, installation and any additional WiFi or network equipment.
A cheaper connection is poor value if it drops during card payments, video calls or guest use. Equally, an expensive service may be unnecessary if an inexpensive mobile installation has already been proven to work reliably at the site.
Which option fits your property?
Rural home or cottage
Check FTTP first. If it is unavailable, test 4G and 5G at the building. Where both are inadequate, Starlink is often the most practical route to a faster connection. Larger or stone-built properties may need separate WiFi access points regardless of the incoming service.
Farm, workshop or rural business
Think beyond the office router. Outbuildings, CCTV, payment terminals, machinery systems and remote-working areas may need a planned wired or wireless network. If downtime would stop work, consider two independent internet routes and automatic failover.
Holiday park, cottages or guest accommodation
Capacity and coverage matter as much as the incoming speed. One fast connection does not automatically produce reliable guest WiFi across multiple buildings or pitches. Caravan, motorhome or seasonal pitch
A portable 4G/5G router can be an economical first option where coverage is good. Starlink Roam or Mini may be useful in mobile dead zones, but plan terms, power consumption, mounting and safe use while moving or parked all need to match the intended setup.
Business continuity and backup
Fibre can remain the primary service while Starlink or mobile internet provides a separate backup path. A compatible dual-WAN router can monitor the primary connection and switch traffic when it fails. The two connections should be tested together rather than assuming failover will work during an outage.
Why headline speed is not the whole story
Download speed is only one measurement. A sensible comparison also considers:
- Upload speed for cloud backups, CCTV and sending large files
- Latency and jitter for calls, remote working and interactive services
- Peak-time congestion and data-management policies
- Short interruptions caused by mobile handover, weak signal or satellite obstructions
- Router placement, WiFi coverage and Ethernet requirements
- Power cuts and whether backup power is needed
- Support arrangements when the connection is business-critical
